Travelling and Going Out with a Person with Dementia

We want to take my mum away for a few days, to her hometown. Is it a good idea? How can we prepare the trip to go well?

A trip can be a great joy — or a source of confusion. The difference lies almost entirely in preparation and the stage of the disease.

Before deciding

Preparing the trip

During the trip

Accept that there might be more confusion in the first few days in a new environment — this is normal and temporary. Have a Plan B to return earlier without drama. And remember the goal: it's not about "doing everything", it's about her feeling loved in a place that means something to her.
